Free alternatives to Canva

Canva Free is already a free plan, so you may not need to switch. The tools below are other design listings with a free plan. Kittl and Adobe Express have unverified paid prices. This page does not add numbers the listings left out. The order is by the kind of design work, not by commissions.

The tool itself

Canva

What it does
A browser design tool for posts, simple videos, presentations, and print layouts, with AI helpers inside the editor.
Who it is for
Beginners who need a decent-looking graphic and do not want desktop design software.
Free plan
Canva Free is available without a paid plan. Free AI use is a smaller allowance than Pro.
Price we checked
Canva Free is US$0 for one person. Canva Pro is listed at US$144 per year for one person on the US pricing page. Business is sold per person (yearly figure not relied on here beyond Pro). Monthly App Store prices can differ. Canva says the price you pay is the one in your billing settings, and taxes may be added.
The catch
Regional pages can still disagree, and Canva says the price you pay is the one in your billing settings. Confirm that screen before you pay. The US$144 figure is a yearly price, about $12 a month if you divide it by twelve. Free AI use is a smaller allowance than Pro.
  1. 1 · Free tier

    Photopea

    What it does
A free photo editor that runs in the browser and opens common Photoshop-style files. It is an editor, not an image generator.
    Who it is for
Beginners who need layers, cutouts, and exports without installing software.
    Free plan
You can open the editor in the browser without a subscription, according to the homepage.
    Price we checked
The homepage describes Photopea as a free online photo editor. A separate paid price was not on that page, so any premium upgrade is unverified.
    The catch
The interface is closer to professional software than to a template gallery. Budget time to learn it. Ads or an optional paid remove-ads offer may appear; we did not verify that price.
  2. 2 · Free tier

    Kittl

    What it does
Designs for merch, labels, and marketing art, with AI actions that spend monthly tokens.
    Who it is for
People making print-on-demand art or product mockups who want templates more than a blank canvas.
    Free plan
Kittl says the free plan is a starting point with a smaller asset library.
    Price we checked
A free plan exists. Kittl's pricing page confirms Free, Pro, and Expert plans and says plans renew monthly or annually. The dollar amounts for those paid plans did not come through in the text we could read, so the paid price is unverified.
    The catch
AI actions spend tokens. Running out means an upgrade or a top-up on the higher plans. Check the commercial license for the assets on the plan you use.
  3. 3 · Free tier

    Recraft

    What it does
Generates and edits images and vector-style graphics from a text prompt.
    Who it is for
People who want icons, illustrations, or simple brand graphics and can work inside a credit limit.
    Free plan
The pricing page discusses images made on the Free plan, so a free tier is available. Credit limits on that plan were not in the docs page we used for prices.
    Price we checked
A free plan exists. Recraft's billing docs say Basic is $12 per month, or $10 per month billed annually ($120 a year), for 1,000 credits. Pro starts at $20 per month, or $16 per month billed annually, for 2,000 credits. Higher credit packs cost more.
    The catch
Credits renew monthly and are easy to spend. Ownership and commercial use depend on the plan. The docs point at the pricing page for the latest allowances, so recheck before you rely on a number.
  4. 4 · Free tier

    Adobe Express

    What it does
A browser design app from Adobe for posts, simple videos, and quick image edits, including background removal.
    Who it is for
Beginners who want templates and are fine inside an Adobe account.
    Free plan
You can start on the Free plan with no credit card, according to Adobe's pricing page.
    Price we checked
Adobe's pricing page confirms a Free plan and a Premium plan. The Premium dollar amount did not come through in the page text we could read, and third-party prices were not used. The paid price is unverified here.
    The catch
Premium features are marked with an icon and can be included with some Creative Cloud plans. A free trial of Premium bills when the trial ends unless you cancel. The Premium dollar amount is still unverified.

Questions

Are these the same as Canva?
No. Photopea is a browser photo editor. Kittl is for merch, labels, and marketing art. Recraft generates images from a prompt. Adobe Express is a browser design app. Read each listing.
Why are some paid prices missing?
The listing left them out when the official page did not show a clear number. This page does not guess.
