Free alternatives to ChatGPT
ChatGPT's free plan already includes text chat with usage limits. Claude and Gemini are the other chat tools here with a free plan. Rytr is narrower: short drafts, with a character cap. It is not a full substitute for a long chat. The order is chat tools first, then the short-draft tool. It is not a commission rank.
The tool itself
ChatGPT
- What it does
- A chat box for drafts, answers, and simple images. You describe the task in plain language and edit what comes back.
- Who it is for
- Beginners who want one place to draft posts, product descriptions, emails, and rough outlines.
- Free plan
- The free plan includes text chat with usage limits. Heavier tools, including some image work, are limited or left off.
- Price we checked
- Free plan at $0. Go is $8 per month. Plus is $20 per month. Pro is $100, $200, or $500 per month. These are US dollar prices on OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing notes dated with the October 14, 2026 model changes.
- The catch
- The Go plan may include ads. Usage is not a fixed number of messages, and it changes with the model. Prices can differ by country.

Claude
- What it does
- A chat tool for writing, editing, and working from documents you upload. It can also make files and simple on-screen artifacts.
- Who it is for
- People who want a second pair of eyes on long drafts, notes, or a pile of reference text.
- Free plan
- The free plan includes chat on the web and in the apps, with usage limits.
- Price we checked
- Free plan. Pro is $20 per month, or $17 per month if you pay $200 up front for the year. Max starts at $100 per month.
- The catch
- Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count. A heavy day can pause you until the limit resets. Prices do not include tax.
2 · Free tier
Gemini
- What it does
- Google's chat app for writing, research prompts, and image help inside a Google account.
- Who it is for
- People who already use Gmail, Docs, or Drive and want the assistant next to those files.
- Free plan
- A personal Google account can use Gemini without a subscription. Heavier features can be unavailable when demand is high.
- Price we checked
- Gemini works without a paid plan, at what Google calls standard limits. Google AI Plus is $4.99 per month. Google AI Pro is $19.99 per month. Ultra starts at $99.99 per month. The dollar figures are the US prices on Google's AI plans page.
- The catch
- Free-tier model access is limited and can drop to a smaller model. Some features are country and age restricted. The plan prices above are the US list.
3 · Free tier
Rytr
- What it does
- Writes short drafts such as emails, captions, and paragraphs from a prompt, and can continue or reword text you already have.
- Who it is for
- People who want a first draft of a short piece and will edit it before they send it.
- Free plan
- The free plan includes 10,000 characters a month, one language, and no plagiarism checks.
- Price we checked
- A free plan is available. Rytr's pricing page calls it free forever and says no credit card is required. Paid prices are also on that page. This listing does not repeat them, because a yearly toggle and a monthly toggle were both shown.
- The catch
- The free plan is a character cap, not unlimited writing. Read which billing toggle is selected before you pay. Generated text can sound generic. Read it before you send it.

Questions
- Is Rytr a full ChatGPT replacement?
- No. Rytr writes short drafts such as emails and captions. Claude and Gemini are the chat tools on this page.
- Do the free plans have a fixed message count?
- Not in these listings. They say usage limits. Claude's listing says a fixed message count is not published.
- Which Visit link is an affiliate link?
- Rytr. Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT are not. That does not move Rytr up the list.
- Will switching chat tools make money?
- No. A draft is not income.
